About

Welcome to Saunapäivä, a blog focusing on the selection of public saunas in Tampere and the Pirkanmaa region! Because Tampere and its vicinity boast as many as 35 public saunas, Tampere proclaimed itself as the Sauna Capital of the World in 2018. The Finnish Sauna Association and the International Sauna Association supported this proclamation. It’s time to find out whether the moniker of Sauna Capital is appropriate or just a bunch of hot air!

A plaque showing that this sauna an “official” public sauna in Tampere. This one can be found in Rauhaniemen kansankylpylä.

This blog came to be when my friend and I visited a couple of newer public saunas in Tampere and decided to start visiting the rest of them in search of the best one. My aim is to provide impressions of each of the 35 saunas as well as a bit of sauna-related tips and info. Hopefully, it will inspire others to discover the public sauna culture of Finland, which seems to be making a comeback. The blog is written in English to encourage foreign visitors to get to know our most famous export, but I hope it also helps Finns who want to find out more about public saunas.

About me: I’m a 30-year-old man living in Tampere. When it comes to bathing in a sauna, I’m a pretty typical Finn and go to the sauna roughly once a week. I’m not a sauna expert and I’ve only recently started visiting the public ones. My fondest sauna-related memories are from my childhood when I would spend whole days swimming and going to the sauna at our summer cottage.
